How to Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on Google

Setting up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), which Google calls 2-Step Verification, adds a critical layer of security to your account. It requires a second step of verification after you enter your password, such as a code from your phone. Here are the steps to set it up:

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Access Your Google Account: Go to your Google Account by visiting myaccount.google.com.
  2. Navigate to Security Settings: On the left navigation panel, click on Security.
  3. Find 2-Step Verification: Scroll down to the “Signing in to Google” section and click on 2-Step Verification. You may need to sign in again with your password to continue.
  4. Get Started: Click the Get started button. You’ll be asked to re-enter your password one more time for verification.
  5. Choose Your Second Step: Google will show you a list of available options for your second verification step. The most common and recommended options are:
    • Google Prompt: This sends a notification to your phone, where you simply tap “Yes” to confirm your sign-in. It’s the easiest and most secure method.
    • Authenticator App: This generates unique codes on your phone. You can use the Google Authenticator app or another authenticator app.
    • Text Message (SMS) or Voice Call: This sends a code to your phone number via text or an automated voice call. While convenient, it is generally considered less secure than the other options.
    • Security Key: This is a physical device that you plug into your computer’s USB port. It’s the most secure option for protecting against phishing.
  6. Complete the Setup: Follow the on-screen prompts for the method you chose. For example, if you chose Google Prompt, make sure the phone you want to use is selected. If you chose a Text Message, you’ll be sent a code to confirm your phone number.
  7. Turn On 2-Step Verification: Once you’ve successfully set up your second step, you will be prompted to turn on 2-Step Verification. Click Turn On to enable it for your account.

After this, whenever you sign in to your Google account, you will need to complete both your password and your second verification step.
